From Film Posters to Commissioned Portraits :-

Sabir Hussain is a name to reckon with, at one time, in thje world of cinama banners and posters. This was in the late sixties and seventies. His first major contract was when Sabir was commissioned to do the posters of the hindi film Chiraag  where he had to execute the larger than life likeness in huge banners of film stars, Sunil Dutta and Asha Parekh.  After that he never looked back and since then Sabir had painted countless number of banners and posters. The once that come to mind to the poster painter, are Bobby and practically all the films that come under the R.K. Banner. He remembers his perfect fineness accomplished in the posters of Kamal Amrohi’s Classic film Pakeezah when Sabir lingered long to bring to life the soulful looks and posters of Meena Kumari, the tragedy queen, after careful study of her histrionics in a number of films.

Having his training as a poster painter, at the Kamal Art Studio, run under his father, Saiyed Mustafa Kamal, the young Sabir learnt the craft of poster painting while rubbing shoulders with professionals of banners and poster painters. His strong observational powers coupled with infinite patience of endless practice enabled him to master the art. During his years as poster painter of a plethora of Hindi films there was a feeling in the deep, dark corner of his mind that there was something missing in his work. This came as a result of Sabir’s frequent visit to the Victoria Memorial , observing with a keen interest the works of British painters. At this point Sabir Hussain was the only one of the ilk of poster painters to be aware that his work lacked the auster dignity and meticulous brush work of British masters and renassiance painters.

So, obsessed Hussain was with the works of the great masters that he decided to call it a day and resign from the world of poster painting. His last assigned work was Nagina and bid adeau to Shri Devi and all the other Devis of bollywood tinsel world, he is now engaged in commissioned portraits. He has received the patronage of reputated artistes in M.F. Hussain, Bikash Bhattacharia,( in collaboration commissioned work of the Grand Canyon at the USIS.) and Wasim Kapoor. Sabir Hussain is planning to told his exhibition through the Global platform of Painters[Artist’s Web portal i.e; www.creativeartandartist.com] where he aspires to highlight a panorama of portraits of Indian master painters along with his own creative works which rope in a number of styles and techniques.
